Type: Proprietary service available via the Virgin Media platform.
Launch: TiVo launch in 2011 Q1 to existing customers (VOD services launched 2005 under NTL/Telewest, then Virgin Media in 2006).
Pricing: TiVo box costs £199 + £40 installation and requires a Virgin Media TV XL subscription (£23.50/month). On demand films 99p-£3.99 for SD, £3.99-£5.99 for HD/3D.
Services: Free catch up services: iPlayer (since 2008), ITVPlayer, 4oD, DemandFive, former LivingTv Group channels (Living, Bravo, Challenge, Channel 1, etc). Free ‘TV Choice’ V.O.D. (Viacom, TimeWarner, terrestrial, Discovery Networks, and more), free on demand music, basic games. VirginMedia are targeting third party apps aggressively – anticipating ‘hundreds’ of third party TV apps within 12 months.
Demographics: 3.7million Virgin Media TV customers. 60% regularly use V.O.D. services. One third of iPlayer viewers came through Virgin Media On Demand.
Developer information: TiVo system will build on Adobe Flash and will be open to developers. SDK and commercial details not released yet. Playback H.264 QAM, FLV OTT
